I’m part of a collective of young people, survivors and civil society organisations coordinated by Plan International Australia pushing to transform Parliament to be representative of our broader community in our country.

Young people should grow up believing anything is possible – that they have opportunities in their lives to shape the world they live in.

After a spate of reports of sexual misconduct in our national parliament, many young women and gender-diverse people are being forced to abandon their leadership aspirations out of concern for their own safety in Parliament.

Sadly, our current national Parliament does not represent the diversity of communities across Australia, with women making up only 31% of the House of Representatives, driven in part by the Labor Party’s existing gender parity targets. Without this, valuable perspectives are not being included in decision-making and as we have seen over the last year, a dangerous culture is allowed to run rampant.

This federal election, we’re calling for all parties to:

1. Commit to implementing all of the Set the Standard report recommendations in the next 6-18 months.

2. All parties commit to reporting on the current diversity characteristics of staff and parliamentarians, and to release a strategy by the end of 2022 to increase gender balance and representation of people of different ethnicities and backgrounds among parliamentarians and staff.

3. Set targets for the representation of women, if not already in place, and for people of different ethnicities to ensure that Federal Parliament reflects the diversity of Australia. All parties commit to achieving population parity across gender, ethnicities and backgrounds by 2030.

4. Commit to introducing mechanisms to report back to survivors on the implementation of the Set the Standard recommendations, and include this in the implementation plan.
