Every major political party agrees that improving gender equality is an important outcome of our aid and development programs, but we can’t get there if we continue to ignore adolescent girls.

In their adolescent years, boys and girls are pushed down very different paths. Girls face additional barriers to finishing school and choosing when they marry and have children – two elements that play a crucial role in gender equality later in life.

Australia’s current policy fails to give these crucial years the focus and funding they deserve.

We’re asking Australia’s leaders to create a targeted Action Plan to ensure girls around the world have better access to high school education and training, stay healthy, safe and free from violence, and have opportunities to be leaders.

Gender equality must include girls

Ask our foreign policy leaders to make girls a priority. It might sound like a small step towards creating gender equality but it’s a crucial one. It means we’ll be able to hold the government to account on their commitments to girls, no matter who wins the Federal Election.
